Thank you . . . it’s been our privilege.

Effective this date, Travers Collins has been acquired by The Martin Group, bringing to a close a 19-year-run as one of Buffalo-Niagara’s most successful marketing communications agencies.

On behalf of the fantastically creative and committed Associates who’ve worked for us since we opened our doors in 1995, we want to thank everyone who contributed to our success, and especially our great clients who comprise a list too long to mention here. You were the winds that powered our sails and we will be forever grateful to the chance you took on us and the loyalty you demonstrated.

It was a great ride and we loved every minute of it . . . the creative ad campaigns, the winning public relations programs, the pro bono work we did for our community. We always moved the needle in more ways than one! As the cliché goes, all good things must come to an end, and we bid fond farewell knowing we did our best and made a difference.

We’re thrilled to be turning our business over to Tod Martin and his dynamic agency, The Martin Group. Tod was a Vice President and Creative Director of Travers Collins from 1995 to 2001, at which time he took the bold step of embarking on his own and starting his agency. He’s done well and now we couldn’t think of a better person or a better agency to hand off our business.

The world has changed just a little bit since 1980. It’s increasingly hard to remember a pre-Internet age, as today, more than 80% of American households have Internet access. The online world is ingratiated into our lives, so it’s getting tougher each year to imagine a time when things weren’t so wired.

Today, there seems to be a million ways for marketers to promote a popular movie franchise. Now, one can create a huge, worldwide buzz in seconds by posting casting information or a trailer online. It’s instant gratification. Thirty years ago, things weren’t quite so instant.

“Chicken Fat” is back!

If you’re a child of the 1960s or early ’70s, there’s a good chance your gym teacher popped a 33⅓ rpm single on a record player a couple times each week, and out of the crackling speakers exploded a blast of marching band horns, followed by the compelling voice of The Music Man lead, Robert Preston.

It’s been nearly four decades since I last heard the staccato of those opening horns, but there it was, coming out of my TV. It caused my brain to scramble back to 1968, when I was wearing an unflattering, magenta, one-piece gym suit and a pair of Keds, and those notes signaled a six-minute-plus routine of toe-touching, torso-twisting, jack-jumping and push-upping hell.

Crisis: It will never happen to us.

There must be something in the water, because we have worked on numerous crisis situations over the last six months.

The headline on this post is somewhat facetious, because I think any business manager worth their salt understands a potential crisis is always lurking around the corner. But regardless, I have seen plenty of people looking like a deer in the headlights when a crisis really does hit.

My 2014 NCAA bracketology.

As the old saying goes, “It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, but how you play the game.” After watching some NCAA games the past couple weeks, I’m wondering if the saying should be, “It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, but how you look doing it.”

I’m just kidding, of course. But after seeing my 9-year old niece beat me the last two years by choosing her tournament bracket winners by simply picking “the uniform colors that I like better,” maybe she has a point.
